Harness Removal on 70 bug

Post by RomanBug »

I'm replacing my main harness on my 70 bug due to an engine fire and too much splicing. Where the harness feeds through the body above the left rear tire it seems to be stuck due to the sprayed in foam. Is there an easy way to remedy this?

Do you have the loom out on the other side?

Are you attempting to save it?

Normally you can "saw" action it with 2 people.. inside and outside.

Seems easier to pull from the inside with the added leverage.

No, I have another harness for it. There should be enough left to 'saw' with. Will that foam stuff melt with laquer thinner?

My other harness is from a 68 autostick. I know there are some differences between the two such as the defrost etc. Should i find a 70 harness or run with what i got?

the harness came out easily once i got it freed up. Still need to know if the 68 harness will work though.

The AutoStick harness should have an extra wire for the ATF temperature sensor(s). You should be able to reassign that wire to control the rear window defogger relay in your `70.

Marc.. great idea.. you're always so freakin smart.

To do advance planning... some of the wire codes changed -- correct?

Can't think of any that'd be different, perhaps the solenoid Term 50 wire may have a different-color (or no) stripe in one of the harnesses.

Neutral Safety switch?

Post by volkenstein »

Guys,
Something else to consider. The A-S loom has the shift wire and starter solenoid wires running through a Neutral Safety switch. RomanBug, compare a manual vs A-S starter curcuit and change as/if required.

What the hell, I'll investigate and post back later...

UPDATE :

Well, it should have one. Follow the red lead from the solenoid spade backwards. There should be a 3 prong plug connection which has red/red/grey (some combo anyway) wires into it. Snip this out and splice the red's (or red/red black) or grab a seperate red and run it back all nice and neat.

NOW may be the time to wire in a hard start relay given you have to hack this section of loom anyway!

I'll check it out tomorrow. I had a couple cut/spliced harnesses that i could have reused up front, but i just got those free along with a towbar for helping a guy pull his motor. he called at 9:30 at night and asked for a quick hand pulling the motor. I get over there and the car is sitting on stacked tires, he barely had the tools and it was an A/S. its 1 and I just got home. oh well.

Sell me on this hard start relay. I've heard of them, but what does it do?

Sale of the century!!

RomanBug,
There's a little discussion about them on this forum, but in a nutshell you hook one into your starter circuit so that any voltage drop caused by the long battery to ign back to starter current feed will still trigger your solenoid with direct-from-battery voltage.

As your ign contacts get older the worse for wear they'll be. Particularly when the beast is hot is when you tend to get most benefit (we don't get nasty sub-sub zero temps here).

In short, ign to relay, opposite to ground. Battery via fused wire to relay and opposite to starter solenoid. Hit "start" and the relay is triggered to feed direct from battery to solenoid.

The neutral-safety-switch leg of the Term 50 wire is all downstream of the inline connector under the LR seat, it's NOT part of the main harness. Neither is the clutch control solenoid wire...the only difference between the 4-speed and AutoStick (main) harnesses that I've ever noted is the blue-red/stripe wire for the ATF temp warning light.

I've searched and run down all of the diagrams that I'll need. I have another quick question though. I ahve a wire coming from my column that was disconnected. It is a thin, flat wire that had a clear film on it. The car has an aftermarket wheel on it. could this be an extra horn wire?

Oops..

Romanbug,
Marc's 100% correct. The A-S stuff I mentioned is just a sub-harness. I'll stop looking at non-Bentley diagrams  !
