Negative cable placement.

Post by mech361 »

:D Sorry,I posted this question in the wrong place the first time. I have a 71 Ghia that has the negative battery cable attatched to a generator stand stud. This just doesn't look right to me, and I was wondering if anyone knew where it should be attatched, thanks for any help. Donny.

The chassis is a convenient ground plane and that is where VW usually first put the ground cable, then to the engine. Americans usually put the ground to the engine block, then to the chassis. When I can, I like to run the ground to an engine/transaxle bolt then to ground.

Which ever you do, check the connections for a good ground. Chase threads in threaded connections and chase bolt threads to make sure that you have shiny metal to use as connections. If there are welds in between important areas that you want to use as grounds, check for continuity on both sides of the weld.

My opinion is worth slightly less than what you paid for it.

Is the engine ground strap not usually attached to one of the bolts at the front of the trans that holds the nose cone on

Having said that a good solid ground from the engine case back to battery negative is never a bad idea
