TRW Steering box trouble

Post by bones »

I'm having a lot of trouble getting the free play out of the box. I have done this on vw boxes many a time following the procedure in Bentley but on the TRW box there is still at least inch of play. It's scary because of the lag time when you turn the wheel and when th turn initiates. The toe is 3mm, 2 sets of caster shims and 1 degree negative camber. it's a ball joint front end. The ball joints and tie rods are new. Any ideas?

Are you certain that the box is mounted securely? I've had'em that would shift on the beam even though they seemed tight - have a helper turn the wheel lock-to-lock while you watch/feel for motion at the box.
