Dual Alternators - Question

Post by MNAirHead »

I read this post by our pal Desert...

For an open engine car.. did you consider dual alternators? (fabbing a mount then using the Stock vw airconditioning pulley setup?)
DesertGuy wrote:Manny, prior to going watercooled I looked at higher output alternators... 75amp, 95amp, etc... It turned out all of them were a rewound stocker. Basically, places like vwparts.net get a stock alternator in and send it out to get rewound at the higher amperage.

I checked around at local alternator shops and quite a few said they could do it. After pricing out a new 55amp alternator and taking it in to get rewound was pretty darn close to one already done. If you already have the alt, that may save a few bucks though.
Anyone have any experience and/or advice?

Aren't GM type alternators higher output?

Yep. GM alternators 95 or 105 Amp stock for under $150.

You do need to consider just how you will drive it though.
The belt will need to transmit roughly double the power that the
old VW one needed. Take a look sometime under the hood of a big GM
car at the belt setup.

yeah it will transmit twice the power, but only at maximum output. it should only take as much power as the original when you aren't drawing alot of current.

when using this setup.. folks are creating a 2nd complete setup aren't they?

Separate battery.. fuses.. wiring?

Isn't the normal use for hi-power stereo and/or lighting.
