need to re-wire my baja...

Post by mat3833 »

ok, well my brake lights, running lights, turn signals, and all except 1 of my in-car signal lights have gone out(that 1 being the oil idiot light) so i am going to re-wire my whole car! i would like to use new style fuses instead of the old crappy ones. what is the best, most complete, most straitforward wiring kit available? i have already ran the wires for my tach so all i will need is privisions for my gas, oil pressure, oil temp, batt voltage, and (soon to add) 4 CHT gages. i think i can wire the car from scratch but i would like to have an eaiser alternative if nothing will work. any sugestions/comments/"your retarded's" are welcome

Basic and quick answer is 12 leads through the car.. this does not include your audio setup.. this probably doesn't belong in the loom.

If it helps, I believe somewhere I have the fuse sizes and wire guages Bob2088 has been recommending for the loom.

Honestly the best loom for a customized VW is one you put together.

what im goig to do right now is patch the old wiring as best as i can untill i can take the time to pull the old wire and start over. should i just buy a 14 curcuit fuse block and have the extra 2 just in case? i have that book to help me out and id like to clean the wire up alot. its kinda a rats nest behind the dash. black and wite wires turning into red ones. green wires becoming black and green. black wires being live. ive been shocked many times, i think my hand is still tingeling from last nights attempts to get things working...

having spare positions is a very good idea.

Barrien has a few on their website...

ok, read through desertguy's wire job and decided to go that route. problem is i dont have the $1300.00 to spend all at once. som im going to di it a bit at a time. could someone possibly draw up an "idiot" diagram of the basic circuits in a car with the relays, switches, fuses, and blocks? im good at wiring but not the settup. also if someone could give me a basic explanation of what a relays purpose is i would greatly apreciate it. wiring a car, or trying to, with already existing non-coded wiring is not easy... shown by the electrical fire that caught my car cover on fire... also, could i get one of those "flasher-relays" from *insert auto parts place here* to use instead of the VW one?

i decided that time spent wiring a car a part at a time is going to waste too much time, and maybe money too.

for a nice wiring job, you dont have to spend all the money that desertguy did.

in collecting parts for my wiring ive spent about $200. i still need swtiches, and anything else that may come up, the plan is to keep it under $300.

Go to www.wiringproducts.com they list the 12 circuit one (AF-GFS-12) without built in ground buss $21.78 and (AF-GFB12-g) with built in ground buss

You want the one without the built in ground buss also check www.wirthco.com

Tako is right you don't have to spend the money Desertguy did But! you still need to take the time to plan your job and do the research to pull it off successfully. A less costly job can look just as nice as what Desertguy built but takes just as much planning and sometimes even more effort

I wish I would have had the resources that are assembled here on this website 25 years ago when i wired my first car I would have been leaps and bounds ahead

Remember a job only turns out as good proportionable to the amount of effort you are willing to put in to it

Relays - what headlights and/or heaters do you plan on running?

At minimum you are going to need relays for your horn and head lights and maybe a cooling fan if you have one and any big driving lights you are thinking about installing
