Every car has an electrical system. Here's the place to learn all about it.

Dual ignition system.

Post by Leatherneck »

I have a MSD 6AL that I have to trouble shoot but the real question is, is there a way to have a MSD box hooked up AND a conventional ignition that is only a toggle switch away?

do you mean have the electronic ignition and a points ignition hooked up at the same time?

If so, you would have to make a secondary circuit for the points and make sure it is completely separate from the MSD wiring. then you would need some sort of selector switch to go from one to the other.

Some systems have a bypass switch.

Yea I screwed up, did not explain my system.

MSD 6 AL to MSD coil to locked 009 coil with points, no condenser.

would like to add Bosch coil, use present coil but add condenser also. Is that possible through a toggle switch?

seems like you could use the points "paralled" to feed both types of igntions. the problem is, the spark characterisitcs of two COMPLETEY different types of ignitions might mean slightly different performance. what are you trying to accomplish?

I would think a better system would be TWO msd boxes, TWO msd coils. MSD sells a special combiner for the output of the two coils to isolate each system and automatically select the working ignition to go the distributor. there would be a switch inside the car to select which ignition to run.

This is a very simple and effective setup. I personally have setup off road cars with this EXACT setup before. This is also the same system nascar uses. the only possible weak ling would be the points, if you were to upgrade to a pertronix style igntion, I would rest assured that you have 99.98% reliability.
I might even have an old pertronix picjup lying around.

David.

I remember seeing a diagragm for some short track courses.. it was a personal build up page.

I can dig up the diagragm when I get back home.

Thanks Timmy, just wanted to have a simple back up for ignition in case the main failed. If you could dig up the schematic would appreciate it. Thanks!
