For road racing, autocrossing, or just taking that curve in style. Oh yea, and stopping!

RetroRacing Question: Rear coil-overs for swing axle

Post by FJCamper »

I'm considering replacing our '65 Ghia's rear torsion bars with a spring plate pivot and adjustable coil-over shocks.

I have no off-road expereince, but understand the conversion to a rear spring plate pivot and coil-overs is common.

Does anyone know what shocks to use, and who has them? I see the pivots advertised in some Hot VW ads.

Is there any reason those pivots should not work on a road racing Ghia?

My reasoning here is with coil-overs, the rear ride height and roll stiffness would both be adjustable. Porsche did this on the 550A Spyders way back, getting away from the torsion bars.

Hi Mr. Camper,

I'm not sure of the best shock for this swap. I've only seen the low buck shock/spring combos.

Check out www.streetstyleandpower.com and their shock section. They've got the GAZ adjustable coil over sets for the Swingaxle and the IRS cars.

I just sent them an email today for myself making sure the price includes VAT (I hope) which means they would be a bit less expensive than what they're listing them for.

I'm sorry, but I'm not familiar with the hot vw ads. Do you mean a similar product as these: http://geersengineering.com/Spring%20Pl ... ainers.htm ?
