Air Compressor Purchase Advice.

Post by TechnicalNut »

Hi Folks,

I'm just after a nod to say this compressor will be ok for shot blasting the underside of my bus and applying paint before I purchase:

v-belt driven, 3hp motor (1hp continuous), 14cfm, 150litre, 10bar/150psi max pressure - (doesn't say if it's oil less or not - I'm not too sure what the merits of either are tbh!)

Thanks in advance,

TechNut,

That size commpressor is a good size.
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

I suspect this will be about the minimum unit for painting whole vehicles. And you will do some waiting while the compressor catches up with your sanding tools and grinders. I have a compressor just slightly smaller and it will just limp by big jobs. But, here in the states, the next step up basically doubles the price. And I don't do very many paint and body jobs.

you should be able to keep up on a gun.. the next piece is to check the CFM requirements of your paint gun.

Note..

I used to have a horizontal air tank.. took up a ton of room.

I switched out for an upright with wheels.. now can bolt it to the floor when needed and move it around without some pals.

Mine is a similar size and copes fine when spraying and using air tools. I used it for media blasting when I restored a Morris Minor ( I used an eastwood pressure blasting pot) It worked but was just about at it's limit and i had to give it a rest now and again to stop it from running continuously which would probably have caused some damage if done for long periods.
