which solo2 class for a ghia?
Any idea where a 2276 ghia would fit in solo2? I read the rules and it looks like one of the Street modified classes but it's difficult for me to tell. It could be argued that a ghia is a 4 seat car instead of a 2+2 since it actually has a rear seat and rear seat belts just like a bug. I have relocated the battery to under the rear passenger seat. I plan to run occasionally just for fun (since it's my daily driver) but I am curious about the class.

I think if you get over 2.2L it's E Prepared. We had a ghia with a Dean Lowry 2332 and had to run in that class.gerico wrote:Any idea where a 2276 ghia would fit in solo2? Classes

Gentlemen,
About SCCA and Solo2...
When we were just a 1.6, but looked racy, SCCA made us run FSP (F Street Prepared). Very competitive class. We started late in the season and missed the yearly champtionship by two points.
When we briefly went to a 2 liter, we were bumped up to DM, D-Modified. Wow, more competition. We took the yearly championship anyway. And the rules people did a switch and gave that year's DM championship to a local sponsor, compensating us with the EM championship.
When we went to 2.2 liters, it was EM. Katy bar the door! Here came the Vipers, V6 and Wankle Lotus kitcars, etc. We took the championship anyway. The points were so close on the last event we ran that the championship was literally going to whomever won, us or a V6 Lotus-7. We won.

Most places don't have enough cars to run in the Prepared or Modified classes these days to make it fun so check out your competition first.
Your Ghia can't be classed in SM but will fit into SM2 however you need to weigh 2112lbs which is a handicap even with torque.
If you have a good number of cars in XP locally that would be my pick. You only need to weigh 1700lbs in XP with your motor. The trade off is it's almost anything goes with some pretty serious cars XP.
Have fun!!

Looking good
Hi Charles,
That's a good looking Ghia. I see you're carrying ballast in the passenger seat.
Do you find you get better handling with or without a passenger? There is the extra weight, but it's in the right place, within the wheel base. We found a passenger would add more stability (predictability) on left and right hand turns.

That pic was from a fun run, so the time wasn't going to count. I was also hamming it up a bit.
Also, our region will only score your run if you do not have a passenger. For exactly the reason you mentioned. Some cars responded better with the added weight in the passenger seat. (IIRC, it's an SCCA solo2 rule as well)
That said, I haven't dialed in the suspension well enough to really notice the weight yet. The car is still a major handful. The last season got spent trying to get a solid power train. That took a year longer than I had planned. Of course, now that I have a solid engine...I'm giving up on my plan to compete at the nationals, and selling this engine. I'm going back to a plan to build a "play" car for the street, solo2, and getting back to the big tracks.
So I'm going subaru power like 55superbeetle did with his project. (he built my current engine.)
