944 rear brake caliper interchange? Need cable ebrake...

Post by DubKru »

I have 944 rear brakes on my bus. I am in need of a caliper that has the same mounts as a 944, but has an external cable ebrake. Anyone know of anything?

I remember reading of a mustang caliper (I must have read this a year ago).

Help
Thanks

The ONLY caliper I've found with an external cable setup, like a 914 caliper, wide enough to fit on a vented rotor is the rear Mazda Turbo II RX-7 setup. Won't be the same bolt pattern, but there you go.

944 brakes have a small drum-type parking brake inside the rotor, so I'm assuming you have some other rotor and a bracket that a 944 caliper bolts to, and you're looking for some other caliper that has a mechanical parking brake mechanism for the pads which'll bolt on.
There are many cars besides the RX-7 that use such a caliper (these are the ones that require a special tool to rotate the piston when it needs to be retracted to make room for new pads)... TRW and Wilwood make some, too, and there are probably others:

You might be thinking of the rear-disc retrofit kit for early Mustangs with 14" wheels/10.5" rotors like the one halfway down this page:

I think they use a single-pot TRW caliper for that setup.

I think you need to reread what I wrote Marc, I said the only caliper WIDE ENOUGH to fit on a vented rotor, vs. a solid one. Of course many manufacturers had the external arm, very few manufacturers used a rear vented rotor, most everyone used the internal shoes for vented rotors.

Dubkru, it looks like all you'd need would be to add something like the SSBC aluminum parking brake caliper to your 944 calipers shown in the link, unless your calipers are worn out and need replacement. That might be easier and cheaper than replacing the calipers altogether.

I should have just hit you up on the vortex. I'm the guy that sold you the tranny. Anyway...

I've got the parts, but getting them to fit inside is the trick. Looks like I have no choice but to bite the bullet and do the internal. I'll wait till I wear these out, then cut the rotors apart so I can see where to place all the components inside. Thanks!

Apparently I was laboring under a misconception, I was unaware that 944=vented rotor (I was told they were the same as the non-vented rotors on my 924T setup but have never verified that). I know lots about VWs, but evidently not enough about Porsches; I apologize if my input obfuscated.
