Chevy or Type 1 journal size

Post by fastback »

I have the option on either Chevy or Type 1 /WBX size on the journal.
What's the pro's and con's??
The Rod's i'm aiming for is available in both size's and i do not have any issues with crank to case clearance
it's a 82mm counterweighted WBX crank.that will be in a 2,5 turbo engine.

Actually they are Buick sized.

Buick journals are smaller and might flex more. VW journals require more material from the case to be removed and weaken the case.

I have a 200hp N/A engine with a 82mm Buick journal crank and 5.4 H-beam rods.

use the vw

I would use the T1 size. unless your rods are way bulky. Im using T1 size with 86 stroke and only had to do some minor clearence at the stud bosses. The cylinder base is mutch wider on the wasser. Im using Crower billet rods.

I'm using VW journals on an 82mm crank with Pauter rods...those rods require A LOT of clearancing, even in a 2.1 case (I actually put a small hole in the top of my case because I was not careful  ). I probably could've milled a bit off the rod, but I simply chose not to.

If I were to do it again, I'd still run VW journals with the Pauter rods. The amount of material that is removed from the case should have a negligible effect on the strength of the case. But other rods may have a more slender cap/big-end and require less clearancing than the Pauters.

holy-moly... whole in the case, hmmm didn't hope they required that much clearancing of the case, as i did a mock-up with the stock rods& the 82 mm crank , and the rod's bareley touched the case a couple of places.
But the Pauter's look alot bigger in the big end.
I see now.
That's logical too :) as they are supposed to be a lot stronger

The Pauters are pretty massive on the big-end...the squared-edges can certainly be cut down to provide more clearance. The area where I broke through was right near the bottom of one of the reliefs for the top case stud/nut...so this was the thinnest area of the case to begin with. Live and learn, I suppose.
