Alt question
OK, I got the drive train out and decided to have the alt tested before throwing the engine back in but the local didn't test this model (confusion w/ the molex connection). Any tips on how to bench test one. It's all stock 76-914 2.0.

Thanks for the post.
Did you take the alternator to a Starter/Generator/Alternator shop or just an auto parts store?
I've had bad results with Autozone etc...
I'll pay about 5% more to have a tenured Bosch Serice center test them..
I NEVER install an engine in a car with out having the bushings, bearings and brushes swapped out... cheap insurance.
Mind if I move this to electrical?

sure, post to electrical, Tim. Also, I did find out why I couldn't find anyone (even some german shops) to test, which you just mentioned re: the regulator. I believe I did see a bosch shop in the yellow pages so I can call them. One VW mech ( circa 71) told me they were usually good for 150K which is due in part to the cool air ducted to it (just like in aircooled aircraft!!!)
