question to the turbocharged vanagons

Post by stef »

hello guys,
i've started the process of installing a turbo to my vanagon syncro(mv engine)
this morning i was wondering how you guys dealt with the brake assistance system?
did you put a one way valve to avoid pressure to get in the pipe?

There's already a check valve in the vacuum line to the brake booster. It's right there in the hose in the engine bay.

To have a reserve of vacuum, you might want to add a vacuum reservoir, maybe one of those eggcrate jobs used on a lot of European cars. There are big ones hung inside the trunk lid on a lot of Mercedes cars. The brake booster stores some reserve volume itself, but its all used up by the second press of the pedal.

If you want brake assist to be guaranteed at all times, though, you would either need a very very large reservoir, maybe several linked together, or a crank-driven vacuum pump of some kind.

Or an electric vacuum pump designed strictly for brake-boosters. Jegs and Summit carry them.

thanks guys for info.
the vacum reservoir is a nice idea, but the vacum pump off a diesel seems really simple!
some alternators from jap diesel have the vacum pump integrated to the back of them. so it's an easy fix.

No need for any vacuum resivoir or any other mods. I haven't had any brake vacuum issues even with a performance cam.

Well It's been a while since I have done much to it. I have been busy with other projects but am working on building a test stand so I can do some engine testing with megasquirt.
The problem has been poor gas milage and oil drain back to the turbo (turbo is too low) causing smoke at start-up.
I'm blowing through a 40 dhla Dellorto. The problem is the idle circuit and transition to main circuit along with the turbo size.
Boost comes on early and the mixture goes full rich at cruise and light throttle once the rpms pick up. I have tried all sorts of jetting to no end Im only running 6lbs of boost but it is a blast to drive
I can't run any more boost as the stock clutch already slips.
So I'm setting up my test stand with a stock 2.1 to do some testing. once the Megasquirt system is up and running with turbo injectors on the mule, it will be transfered over, along with relocating the turbo and adding an intercooler. I have heard of issues with the stock distributor not easily read by MS even with the mods- We shall see. :?
I will repost some old pics as soon as I find why photo bucket is refusing my password
