1303 cabrio - wind tunnel

Post by caslor »

Hi to all my Friends here :)

As i haven't find anything similar in the net i decide to make a wind tunnel for my Greek Forum in order to test some vw car models.

For observation - how our cars reactive to the air

The first test was with a plastic car model 1:24 scale - 1303 convertible beetle

the quality is not so good as i didn't have the digital video camera and capture it with my dig photographic camera .

hope in the future make improvements

enjoy

Sorry if it is in the wrong thread but didn't know where was better to place this post

As usual Caslor very cool and helpful. Couple questions though, at what scale to mph is the wind force applied and would it make a difference if it was faster or slower?

I dont know the speed of the wind as it is to expensive this kind of instrument... but i am planing to make one from a bicycle digital speedometer in order to know every time the wind speed .

i have to change the design of the wind tunnel as i saw that the smoke was forced from the pipe with speed so it was not so easy to see if the wind tunnel speed made any difference at low and fast...

hope find more free time to upgrade it....

also want to make an extra option to measure the weight at front and the rear of the car so we can see if we have lift at high velocity ...

the model is 1:24 but if i want to add weight to this scale that would be almost 30 kg (to much for a plastic model)

if i add less weight ... will be problem ?

any ideas for future experiment ?

lower it!! see if lowering the front vs all the way around affects the aerodynamics of the car

How did you build the wind tunnel? Also, how is the smoke wand made? How do you make the smoke? I have always been curious about that.

I have always liked the idea of building my own wind tunnel but adding a scale for the front and back so I could measure downforce.

Hi !!
Sorry about the time i made to answer...

i will lower it ;) but i want to build a new wind tunnel first ... with more options to experiment

Air_Cooled_Nut i will not tell you how i build it as it is to simple...
you just have to make a round or square tunnel that will be twice in size at least of your model height

if your model is 20 cm tall so the wind tunnel should be 40cm at least (more is not a problem)

the smoke is made from Dry ice
just place dry ice in water and you will get the smoke effect - fog

I think with little search you will find a store around you that can buy dry ice

Thanks, sounds simple enough and I can get the dry ice. But how do you get it to go out of the wand? Or does the air from the wind tunnel suck it out?

when dry ice goes to water... it is like boiling (but not) and the smoke came out in pressure from the hose i have place in the bottle (where is the dry ice and water )

and this is one of the problems that i want to fix in my next test...

tha smoke should not come out in pressure.. it should be as a fog so tha air from the wind tunnel suck it out... and make it follow the cars shape.

that is why the motors for the air are placed always to suck air and not blow...

check this video and you will understand what i am saying

Huh, I didn't think sucking would be better than blowing...oh jeeze, that came out sooooo wrong!
