Garrett VNT control, electronic versions (HELLA)

I have been looking off and on for this info for months, someone nailed it recently:
Blatantly crossposting from another site as folks may find this useful info.

From: http://www.superturbodiesel.com/std/ele ... t-614.html

Pin 1 is 12V, pin 2 is ground, pin 4 is the PWM signal.

PWM=10v?, 12v+ will let the blue smoke out. 5v no workee.
(limit this to under the power feed V+ in any case)

PWM freq=~140hz

~10% closed, ~90% (or no PWM=100% ala dead ECM) open

FWIW my turbos are off a 2.7L Merc diesel truck... GT22V.

Megasquirts programmable PWM IAC setup could easily run this, not sure about the EBC as-is.

This video show it in action on the bench:

In Europe these are used by many OEMs (and more will use them for vehicles released next year to meet the Eu5 regulations)

Be warned that some use CAN (the look similar). The good thing is though you can remove the clips and swap the electronics over easily.

I could be wrong, but I don't think these will put up with the exhaust gas temps seen in gasoline applications. Porsche is the only one to do it so far. All other VGT setups that I have seen are diesel.

And yes, some of the newer ones are "smart" devices that do their own routines and diagnostics, and talk CAN.

That is a consideration, they probably won't tolerate EGTs at the turbine over 1000F for extended periods.
Possibly work well on "remote" installs, w/long exhausts or E85 service.

Garrett seems to think the materials/design is better than the first gen VNTs, but only one way to be sure...

You gonna volunteer?

I fully intend to... twice.

Via the freq multiplier board JBperf sells, MS1-extra (theoretically) should be able to directly control the vanes/boost.
(as far as I can tell, the 140Hz doesn't have to be exactly 140Hz... 120-160 is just as likely to work)

Should know for sure in a week or so, depending on Canada post.

Presently trying to sort why I can't talk to a newborn MS1 1.01, seems to actually be functioning on the stim, just no talkee.
Fortunately I socketed all the ICs.

Why do you have such an old board, was it free? I didn't think it was possible to get anything older than a 2.2 these days, but I suppose there are some floating around from the orignial group buys. Are you going to write code as well?

Not yet, maybe if I hack it for a MS2 daughterboard, I can still remember a little C, but MS1 assembly ain't happening

The board (and many other goodies) showed up courtesy of the STF Megasquirt Conspiracy.
(They can fess up if they wish  )
There were actually two lonely, long ignored 1.01 boards... one already assembled and functional, with the latest MS1-extra firmware loaded.

I already added the "missing" X0-X7 tie points to the virgin board along with a few other minor tweaks (swaged eyelets for the power devices, sockets, reworked a few things for packaging reasons (for future expansion)) debated adding the other V2.2 jumpers, but that will wait. The original V1.01 injector driver setup will work just fine for what I have planned.
Ignition setup is still TBD, but it's probably going to be COP, with a pair of hall sensors...

I debated just making a v2.2 board from scratch and populating that, but that just wouldn't be right somehow, or as much fun.
(drilling all those holes would be a drag, and G10 is hard on drill bits)

The other 1.01 (working) board (and most of the goodies) are now destined for another long time STF member who deserves a new toy, he is far more than capable of modding it himself if he needs the extra outputs/inputs.

Tomorrow is Saturday for me, so I'll play more then, gotta crash...
(Sorry to wander so OT, but I guess you cannot technically hijack your own thread....)

Still completely off topic, just a follow up:
Finally had a few minutes after work to TS the "no comm"//serial issue on the just assembled MS1---

The pre-assembled board worked with the 6V wall wart the loaner stim came connected to. (~7.3v actual)
The new build lit up the RS232 box as soon as I hooked up a proper 12v brick, and talks, she works fine.

I'm so relieved I didn't suck

Yeah, it needs a good source of voltage or it quits working. I used to lose comms all the time on the stim using a 9v battery, so I broke down and got a 12v wart. Haven't had a problem since.

I work in diesel development. The current turbos are safe up to 850degC 30/40 degrees more and they can become damaged.
You are more likely to damage them by overspeeding them

Thanks for the info, I now have a firm max.

Curious if ceramic coatings would be useful on the vanes etc...???

Seems like it would be an ideal test for coatings, anyway.

Funny enough pile i asked this same question over on megasquirt forum if anyone used their system to run a vgt turbo. I am planning to buy the ms 2 with extra code and run coil on plugs on my engine say somewhere here that you will be trying coil on plug also, would this be great to actually do this for the vw aircooled engine.

The Evil Plan is to use the PWM freq multiplier board from JBPerf to get a 'close enough" freq.

I'm hoping to get SOMETHING done on this in the next few weeks.

Good day Pile is this the board you are talking about.
