Planning new engine

Post by Humble »

I've been mulling over a new WBX for a while now but I just don't know enough about them to go forward. I'm planning a new, possibly WBX, engine for next year's race season as a way to cope with heat and add power. Currently I'm running a built 2165 turbo, dry sump, fuel injected, water/alcohol injected beast pushing 240whp @ 21psi. I'm adding an intercooler to keep temps down and add power but I still have to keep a careful eye on the gauges for anything longer that a sprint. Did I mention this is for a circuit car? :)

The rough outline for the new motor:
T5 case, shuffle-pinned, T1 lifter bores
forged 82 or 84 crank, chevy journal
94 lightweight forged pistons, weisco or the like
h-beam rods with arp bolts
Aggressive turbo cam with 4000-8000 power band
straight cat gears, cb perf. if they work
MS3 engine management
autocraft dry sump pump
borg warner efr or garrett gtx turbo
worked heads, equivalent to wedge ports with cb650 or k800 valve springs
ceramic coatings on pistons and heads
low friction coatings on bearings and cam gears

I'm aiming for 650hp+ peak then dial it back to 3 settings, low boost ~300hp, high boost ~400hp, and scramble boost ~500hp. This is a circuit car that will spend 20-30min on the track at a time with about a third of that time in boost above 5000 rpm. I've seen crazy hp numbers coming of these engines and I'd like to try it myself but what I need is a little help on the particulars. I can start with a 1.9 or 2.1 case which ever is easier and go from there. Crank and head work I'm not sure about, same with the piston/cylinder combo. It's got to mount to a z-case type 1 tranny for now, and the case should hold for road course use.

I've I can get this built soon enough I'll have a turbo 2165 for sale :)

Humble, life can get tough once you go turbo, you may find your in a class with skylines and cosworth stuff, check the regs where you intend to race it before finalising things, also some no No's in your spec anyways, don't use chevy journals, too weak, VW journal goes in and passes the cam at 84mm with the right rods. you will have to change the trans for turbo work, as you know, its torque that will snap shafts like twigs. the later injection cases have slightly more room at the top for clearance to an 84, but they go in early cases anyway, i also like the 'old style' early bearings, I'm using both types on track and don't get problems with them either way, your call on that one. but its Good to get another wasser trackside, good luck and hurry up then... :D

I'm not worried about the trans just yet, it's a fully built rancho pro drag ssc irs with pro rings, albins shafts and albins gears. I'm not drag racing (pretty futile with a 2.90 1st and 3.88 r&p), so the tranny will be able to take a little more hp. Once it does go I'll probably go porsche or mendeola for the gearing options.

I'm using chevy journal now and have for quite a few years, I've never heard that they are particularly weak in any way unless that is for certain type of con rod. I'll be aiming for a forged H-beam or I-beam rod and have yearly, off season tear downs to check for abnormal wear.

As for classing, even with my current power to weight I'm among the top tiers at around 8lbs/hp. The next break point is 6.7lbs./hp and anything more than that is top tier, so more than 320whp for my current weight. For sprints, hillclimbs and autox I already run unlimited classes OSP and XP. The rules for OSP is "it had to have been street registered at some point in it's life" and XP is the silhouette has to resemble a production car.
