Coils coils coils
For my new car I'm building a new MSII based on a 3.0 board, coupled with Marios crank trigger. I will be distributorless for the first time so I'm looking at wasted spark coil options.
I'm shying away from an EDIS pack for several reasons, I want spark cut for rev limiting, and I'm not sure I trust an EDIS setup to reliably light off a VW under 20 psi of boost. Then there are the funky spark plug wires
I like the thought of a single 4 coil pack (like EDIS) rather than mounting 4 coils remotely due to space, simplicity and cost.
So am I over thinking this, should I just run an EDIS pack?
What are your thoughts on logic level trigger vs having MS fire a coil?
Looking for ideas to make this simple and effective.

If you're worried about it, run the Accel EDIS coil. Supposed to be stronger, though the regular one is pretty potent.

EDIS was the bee's knee about 5 years ago, things have changed and direct fire is where it's at. I'm just running gixxer coil packs (the friggin long ones too, boooo me), and I friggin love the ign setup. I had a little drama with resets on the non-resistor plugs but resistor plugs solved that, since then drama-free. I'm only at 2000 miles on this motor/ms setup, but the ignition system is the best part of it.

Re: Coils coils coils
I'm running these Accel #14033 ignition coils in wasted spark form until I get around to doing a cam sensor to go sequential:

They pack a pretty mean punch. Me and Chip bought a V8 set and split them.

This is where I'm leaning, that and a couple BIP373's should do it. I sent a message to Matt at DIY to see what kind of performance that coil pack produces. Want to stay compact, no COP this time around.

These are compact but I'm not sure if they will light off that much boost.

Re: Coils coils coils
Matt from DIY sent me an email response saying the 4 pack will do the job so I ordered it. I'll add the BIPs when I build up the MS2. Going to make one all encompassing harness so I can sell the motor later as a turn key setup. Will also help me remove it from the car when I swap to a water pumper.
Too hard to sell a FI turbo motor without it being a bolt in thing for people, too much fear of computers and wires, but they love it when it's turn key.

I'm eager to see how they perform. I would love to witch to new coil packs instead of used EDIS packs in my kits.

Re: Coils coils coils
You should have kept those LS2 coils
They really are easy to work with and the ignition noise is ~zero at the MS.
I Do appreciate the deal tho!

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Re: Coils coils coils
Well, to be honest I probably would have still wanted to stick with one pack to keep the harness cleaner when I sell the engine, no interest in going sequential. I'm going to add a heavy duty 3 pin connector to my MS box for the ignition, this way I will have a separate ignition and fuel harness to simplify things and hopefully better shield noise.Piledriver wrote:You should have kept those LS2 coils

One of my main concerns with this coil pack is I would have liked to be logic level trigger for the reason you made. I'm sure it will all work out fine in the end....

We'll know soon enough, should have it all together and prototyped in less than a few weeks. The coil pack/BIP373 is suprisingly cheap, wonder if it's the same coil SDS uses?MarioVelotta wrote:I'm eager to see how they perform. i'm planning on using the one off the mk4/5/6 vw golfs, they do a the 1.8 turbo but unsure of how they boost and rev limit...

Back to OEM coils? I thought the point was to find something stronger? Might as well stick with EDIS...
