who can tell me the gear ratio on a 1978 vw bus?

I can't say with certainty. Even if it still has the same trans it left the factory with, there are still 2 possibilities. Best thing to do would be to count turns on it. The R&P ratio choices are different for a Bus trans than for a Bug, but it's a fairly safe bet that 2nd is 2.06 and 3rd is 1.26...the procedure's the same as discussed here: http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=80760
