large exhaust tips

Post by lboos »

anyone know where I can get the larger exhaust tips for my 1972 bug ? I've seen them on other bug's around town, they sound a little louder then the stock one's, Does any one have them on their bug ? are they worth the trouble ? Thanks

Back in the day they were the only modification you could make to your exhaust without voiding the warranty, and were available as a dealer-installed option...commonly called "Taper Tips". Item #39: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/dic ... rtips1.jpg
Reproductions are available; the price has gone up and the quality of the chrome has gone down (keeping them clean helps) http://www.jbugs.com/product/3693.html

They're also made in stainless steel, seems to be a popular thing in Great Britain (for about twice the price) but I don't know who handles them stateside.

As far as any performance enhancement, most of it's psychological - might be one honest horsepower to be gained. Simply removing the packing from the stock tips and cutting them a couple inches shorter has more effect, but that makes for a pretty boomy exhaust note that your neighbors may not appreciate. The stock tips are optimized for minimizing cool air reversion into the muffler on decel, which can cause backfire farts...the packing helps suppress any remaining piddly-pop-pop sounds too...so any of these modifications tends to increase the chances of objectionable backfire noise when going downhill, but the taper tips are the least offensive.

If you really want to make some noise with a stock muffler, get a "Zoom Tube" (I call them "BOOM tubes") http://www.jbugs.com/product/3360.html
All the performance gain of shortened/gutted stock tips PLUS an echo chamber to ensure that the world hears you coming.

Marc,
Thanks for the info. on the exh. tips, about three weeks ago I had a 1776 eng. built and installed in my 1972 S/B which I've had for 20 years now, the eng. that was in it was working just fine and was rebuilt 14 years ago, but was a little on the weak side, the same guy that rebuilt it rebuilt the 1776, what a world of diff. in power, I just want to change the sound a little plus I like the looks of the tapered tips, I'm not a hot rod guy, in fact I'm an old dude that just likes VW air cooled, I've owned about a dozen over the years....a pair on order, Thanks
