Speedy Jim help please

Post by Fast Eddie »

I have a car that was running a generator with the voltage regulator mounted on the firewall behind the motor. Everything was working properly but I changed motors out and decided to go with an alternator that was on the engine I installed. The alternator is a Motorola "white box" style. I was wondering and have researched on your site to try and figure out how to wire this to my current regulator. Any help would be much appreciated.

The "white box" IS the voltage regulator on that model alternator, you need to remove and bypass the generator regulator completely (as in any alternator conversion - generator regulators are not compatible with any alternator). These "internally-regulated" Motorola units aren't very common, and repairing/rebuilding them is cost-prohibitive, but essentially the car is wired the same as it would be for a Bosch AL82 so you'll be good to go for one of those if/when the Motorola gives up provided you leave a little extra length in the B+ wire(s).

The warning light wire goes to the spade lug labeled D+ (close to the fan shroud end of the white box)
Output wire(s) to the solenoid B+/battery and dash loads connect to the threaded B+ post atop the alternator.

If you have another spade lug on top of the white box, nothing needs to go there.
There is an m5 threaded bolthole on top of the alternator housing where a ground wire may be attached but it's superfluous, the housing is grounded by contact with the pedestal already.

Thanks Marc. This is the alternator that came off my 77 standard that was trashed so I just figured I would use it since it was lying around. maybe I won't have to change it anytime soon but if I do ill go with the bosch internally regulated. The ironic part is that I went and searched all over the 77 for a regulator and couldn't find one. I found the wires and connector that should go to one but could never source the actual regulator. never knew that the Motorola white box ones where internally regulated.

The externally-regulated alternators (like the Bosch AL78 and the "other" kind of Motorola) have a round three-prong plug on top. If the car left the factory with an externally-regulated alternator it'd have the harness for it, but if an internally-regulated unit gets installed those wires just go along for the ride. The regulator, if installed, is mounted to the body under the back seat behind the driver's side B-pillar and it doesn't have to be removed (unlike the generator regulator, which must be bypassed when converting to alternator).

I have a couple of `77s -Sedans- at home and honestly don't remember whether they have/had regulator harnesses/plugs from the factory, I'll need to look when I get back to town ;)
