Temp sensors ect

Hello,
i didn't want to spam up other threads so starting this one.
Marc posted some links to a TC (thermocouple) reader and sensors he had which sparked my interest.
i brought a 3m long thermo couple off eBay cheaply a while back but sold it with a VDO gauge.
i'm thinking 4 sensors and reader and some sort of rotary switch, although will have to look into that.
and a sensor in the dip stick.... which i'm wondering if i could get one that same length as my stock dipstick...? so i can still check the oil height easily.?
its either this or buy a £190 SPA gauge for oil temp (and pressure) AND a CHT gauge...
On the subject of joining TC's, i need to double check but at work the TC's on the jet engines in helicopters have a wire about 2 foot long to a joining block (screw poles and ring terminals) which is attached to the side of the jet engine... i need to check what wire they use from there into the cockpit...
anyway, just thinking out loud and any input would be great

The cheap sensor I found on eBay isn't long enough to reach the bottom of the dipstick tube and touch moving oil, so what you're really getting is more like the temperature of the case, via the dipstick tube - but that's true of most "oil temp" sender locations, and better than nothing. I have another such sensor on order, thinking of placing it at the oil filter or cooler line and comparing readings/response time. For the dipstick-tube location, I simply removed the supplied mounting nut and twisted on a short length of fuel hose that's a light push-fit over the tube to hold it in place.

thats a point, i guess thats how most work or are impacted on via the case temp....
i was thinking of drilling and tapping my inline fan switch for a temp sensor as well for TRUE oil temp...

Next road trip I take I'm going to Ty-Rap my "oil" sensor securely to the oil filter (with some insulation over it to block the wind) - if that works out, it'd be an easy-sleazy way to go.

sounds similar to how the sensors that screw into the case will read/react...? be interesting to see!

I just use the sender that replaces the oil relief plug at the pulley end
I'm lazy

and a CHT on #3

Liking this one, it's simple, also a sender fitting filter head works well, keeps wire away from the engine, don't forget kiss.

I'd be interested in those results, few wraps of duct tape would keep the wind off...
Yeah I've seen some near setups.
I'd think if rather a digi read out for oil temp that I can put in the glove box as some short sweep gauges are very low res?... But we'll see!
Relied plug is an easy one yep! Tempted to look at making one...

Seems to work ok, I think it gets heat soak at standstill but then so does the oil so hard to tell, but it works and responds fast

It would be quite easy to add a T to your oil filter line and use a common temp sensor.

So, on long runs sat at 60mph for 40mins it read 60*'s
When stopped it would climb to 70*'s and drop back down quickly as I drove off again.....
Wether it's accurate I don't know but that's pretty cool. But it was stable so was happy with that!
