Cross threaded framehorn

Post by Jprather »

Hello,
I've been working on my 68 Baja and crossthreaded the 27mm bolt that holds in the gearbox. The bolt is fine but the frame horn is not. Any ideas on how to fix?

Do you have the right size of tap that you could chase the threads properly with? You might end up with heli coiling the area assuming it is possible.

M18x1.5 is the thread. Get this tap and run it through the threads. This tap is the same as an oxygen sensor so it's not hard to find.

Inspect the bolt that came out very carefully. The chances of it being perfect when it took out the threads in the frame horn are slim. Best is to replace it with a Genuine VW one.

After you fix the threads with the tap, turn the screw in by hand until it goes all the way. I have seen many of the threaded inserts that were welded in by VW slightly tilted so that the unthreaded part of the screw binds against the bore of the hole. When this happens, it can cause galling. Before I discovered this, I noted that every time I took out the bolt on one side of my car, the threads were no good. I used the die grinder on the bore of the frame horn to eliminate this problem, and since then the bolt comes out in perfect condition.
