edited as after reading I realized I asked to vague of a question.

I have a type 4 1700cc (EA stamp) running engine all original and needs a refresh.
Engine is going into a baja bug with the Cali conversion. It is going to be a fun car not a daily driver.

assuming the crank checks out would the following be a decent choice as a starting point or would you recommend something else?

web cam 163 grind
96 pistons
duel Weber 40 idf's
1 5/8 exhaust
Heads? I know I would need to have the 1700 heads bored out and a valve job done. I do not really know what to do here. New heads? or any recommended shops that I can send my used ones to? any recommendations?

With as long as it take to change an engine in a baja I suggest building both. Per CC the t-4 will make more torque and cost you far more money

I would run it “as is’ in the beginning, the 1.7 were very near perfect out of the box, 40s are great

Location?

Sorry Slideshow I just caught this, been busy at work. I probably will build both eventually. I am currently living in Oklahoma

I would keep the heads and have a reputable VW porter just clean them up and install some larger valves and they also come with the desirable lifters which you can fit the porsche valve adjuster to.

Were you able to install the larger valves and have it cleaned?

I’d check Adrian at Headflow Masters
Or European Motor Works for heads

Get 42 x 36 while you’re at it if they need seats.
