Drag and Drive Baja

Post by Schweg »

Wanted to start up my build thread so you guys can help and I can log what I have going on.

Inherited the car, was into motorcycles for a long time mostly air cooled. This is my first VW, I have lurked around the forums and more recently sent some PM’s but that’s about it.

Pan is a 69
Body is a 74
Link pin front ( not sure on the rear)

1600 ish cc ( haven’t pulled it apart to check)
Stock everything as far as I can tell

Currently I’m mid EFI install:
MS3PRO 1st Gen
LS injectors and coils
Innovate PSB-1 wideband and gauge

Need to buy:
injected manifolds
Fuel pump
Fuel pressure regulator
New turbo header

I have a Nissan 45v3 turbo off of a Skyline that I currently have running blow through on a PICT34 and a locked out distributor. Tried 3 different runs with jetting to make boost and never had luck. I wanted to go EFI just didn’t know it would be this soon.

Ultimate goal is around 250hp running E85 or water meth injected 91. I also have a Holeset HX35 waiting in the wings. Time will tell if the little 1600 will spool it, or I may just build a compound turbo set up.

Thanks for reading.

That is a holset, I had no luck making boost with it ( could have been any number of issues ) went over to the skyline turbo. Then after a few rounds of jetting I said screw it and started building an EFI set up.

If that was my car I'd twist that up pipe (wastegate) to the turbo 180° or at least 90°.

I’m getting a new header, I’m not real happy with my own fav skills or the material I have available.

But yes looking back I should have turned it the thought never crossed my mind.

Very well said but some of us take longer than others  .

Keep up the good work on your buggy.

Lee,

I’ll keep up the work. No guarantee on quality.

 Quality comes with practice, mistakes and learning from them and sometimes with the help from others. Again, keep going forward; heck, look at how long my build has gone on; I have learned (and forgotten) so much over the long build.
