-72 1641cc turbo build log

Post by villemil »

Hello everyone! I'm Ville, 19y and I'm from Finland.
I started my aircooled hobby 2018 December when I bought my first bug from 1972 with a broken engine.
I have always been interested in aircooled VW's because I have been handing tools and watching my dad work on them as long as I remember.
I have self learned almost everything what I have done to my bug, got a decent engine for it, built the suspension and made it nicer overall. The engine was a 1835cc with dual Riechert Solex 34 PCI carbs and mahle pistons etc. It lasted only for 15000km and now I have decided that it is time for a turbo!
Me and my dad has zero experience on boosting an aircooled boxer but I bet it will be a fun journey!

My current plan is to start with stock 1600DP engine, add turbo cam for it and do a good head porting, atleast thats a start!
Not going to chase any specific horsepower or 1/4mile time. Just doing this for having fun when summer comes!
I will definetly keep posting here on this thread when my build really starts going and going to add pics to my project page on instagram if you are interested: @boosted_bug
Added few photos from last summer :)

I'm going for draw trough, going to use the stock intake manifolds with some modding for bigger diameter for the pipe connecting those 2 manifolds. For exhaust I'm going to mod my aftermarket manifold to fit for a turbo. Plan for that is to turn the collector to face upwards and make a pipe from the manifold to the turbo.
Don't know which carb I'm going to use yet but I got a Weber IDF40 on the shelf which might work well for me.
It's going to be a really tight budget build.
Inside the engine I'm going to change for stiffer valve springs and Engle TCS-20 camshaft.

How much boost can a stock engine handle with stock compression? And for ignition what should I do? (remember my tight budget!) One way is to get a Saab vacuum canister with boost retard but those are pretty rare to find.

Going to do it pretty similar to this one (found this pic on this forum)

Maybe a cb blackbox?
Better to be blown than to suck!

I’m on a bone stock 1600, nothing internal changed that I know of. I run 22 lbs but I’m EFI and have good timing control.

A lot of guys run locked out 009 distributors.

I ran my stock 1600 to 30 psi of boost to mine on E85 fuel. But I also have FI and an intercooler. Most people say 12-15 psi with a good tune.
I just put a similar cam to the TCS 20 in mine and I hate it. I liked the stock one better. Might look at leaving it stock or something with less duration. TCS 10 would be better.

Why did you hate it? What was bad about the cam?

try and find a DCOE 40 side draft, and there is a few tricks to make them work, lock or limit the timing to 24* max, for a stock motor get a W100 Engle  turbo cams are marketing B.S.,,,,and do Port them heads! cheers, madmike

It's really hard to describe, but I guess the best way is it seemed to move everything 1000 rpms later. I still start to build boost at pretty much the same rpms, but it takes more rpms to build it fully. With the stocker it would build full boost super quick. Just more drivable. It is faster with the new cam, but I have to wring it out more. It also made way more vacuum with the stock cam and idled better.
Put it this way, I've considered pulling my engine and pulling it apart just to put a smaller cam in it.
Of course this is just my experience.
Normally I would agree with Mike on turbo cams, but on a stock head, stock valve, stock size engine, the split duration might actually be pretty good. But would need to be sized right. More like the tcs10. The W90 or W100 would work well too. If the stock cam and lifters are in good shape I'd leave em and spend the money getting control of the spark.

Your cam is only .02 inch different in lift compared to mine. You do have a few more degrees duration at .050" but otherwise the lobe center would be something to look at.
My W-100 is .420 lift at 1.1:1 and 236 degrees duration at .050".

I think on a stock size engine that extra 14 degrees of duration makes a big difference. Too much overlap. It really shows in my idle kpa. I'm also on a 112 lobe. I even advanced my cam 2 degrees to bring things down in the rpm range.
Don't get me wrong. The cam works and it goes like hell, but it was a much better driver with the stock one.
I'm at 7.8:1 compression. I think it would be way better if I could run more. I would like to try something more like a Web 218. It's .455 lift with 242 duration @50.
