Type 4 turbo piston help

Post by tonyorlo »

I am going to finally order pistons for my Ghia type 4 project. After getting “forged” Mahle 2.0 pistons and questioning their forgedness I’ve decided to go with something better. I would like to keep the dimensions near stock just for simplicity.

I am looking at 2 piston options and I would like to hear what you all think.

1 - JE 96mm Piston and Cylinder kit from ACnet. Stock pin dia and Comp height.

2 - Wiseco 94mm pistons (Type 1) with the pin dia and Comp height changed to the 2.0s. For the Cylinders I could either buy 94s from AA pistons, or get 93s and have them bored to 94.

I like the idea of the JE kit, because it’s a ready to go kit, I don’t have to source out machine work. Unsure of the alloy they are, on their site they recommend a 2xxx alloy for boosted apps. Am I pushing it boosting 96s?

I also like Wisecos because I specify the alloy. If I could go with 94 cylinders that would be great. Is that a bad idea? Should I really have the cylinders machined to the pistons?

The car is intercooled and water injected, with EFI. I don’t plan to run anymore boost than 15lbs, I would like to stay around 10.

Thanks for any advice!

I bought Mahles, but I don’t think they were forged. They were advertised as forged. For what I had in them I didn’t want to risk it.

I have 96mm JE forged pistons, but I've only ever bench run my engine so hesitate to recommend them - except a respected UK engine builder told me to use them for boosted, so I did!

Yep, and consider that I'm in the UK, have to import from the US, pay more taxes......but I decided to go for it in the hope the engine doesn't destroy itself as doing an engine build twice sure isn't cheap. Do it once, do it right - at least I hope I did it right

I’ve only contacted Wiseco about custom pistons, not JEs. We’re yours off the shelf ones or custom?
