gb engine what valves

Post by pnikas »

Hello everybody, I have a gb engine with 42-36 valves, I kind of need new ones.
The options are as I have seen
1) trw sodium cooled exhaust valves and trw inlet valves
2) AE brand solid exhaust and intake valves
They are both kind of expensive, but the trw ones are more expensive of course,
What would you people suggest ?

Hi pnikas,

I got a set of very affordable new stainless valves in 42x36mm from vwparts-aircooled.net for my GB heads back then.
They worked great and I tuned the engine quite a bit, no pussy driving afterwards. Essential is also to have new guides installed, partly because the 36mm valves are 8mm stem and the original exhaust guides of those heads are 9mm, but mostly of course because a new "tight" (not too much) fitting valve has more cooling surface time then a loose old guide does.

The old method (VW-porsche) of sodium filled valves is really not neccesary we know today, trust me on that one. New guides and a tight fit, good ream and good valve seat job are more important ;-)

John from aircooled.net probably still supplies these stainless (they have a nice swirl polish too) type 4 valves if you ask him nicely (if they are not in the store atm).
GL!
