Converting Waterboxer to Aircooled

Post by sprbxr »

A few months back I bought a UK VW Magazine, in it was a german guy who coverted a Waterboxer to aircooling. He machined the waterjackets off the case and I think he used type one parts to complete the engine. Is anyone familiar with this conversion? I have a Waterboxer engine with blown head gaskets that is waiting for some attention. Would this be worth the effort?

Converting Waterboxer to Aircooled

Hi
This was done down under by Hellbug in the late 80s. They call them Oxyboxers. The basic idea is to remove the waterjackets and then fit Beetle heads timware and carbs etc of your own choosing. The biggest problem is the head studs, the wasserboxer has a larger pcd for the head studs than the type 1 engine so you will need to have some special off-set head studs made.
The wasserboxer case is tough, if you are building a mild motor the wasserboxer cam is hard to beat, anything wilder either get a hydraulic type 1 cam or rebush the lifter bores for type 1 lifters and world is your oyster in hot cams. You will also need to rig up an external oil cooler.
On the other hand I kept the water jackets and have 15 years of trouble free high perfomance motoring with a wasserboxer motor in my bug. Its worth a thought, check out this link to see my bug. http://www.clubvw.org.au/steve.htm

there is also now a company in the UK who use the wasserboxer crank in their type 1 engines. The main gain is you can have a longer stroke crank that doesn't bend flex and bash out the centre main saddles under load, and which also lets you use the big bearing shells that make the Type4 and wasserboxer bottom ends so reliable.
