71 Baja build

Post by blue1957 »

Started on this thing last weekend. Got the main cage done. Alot more to tie into it. Getting the front ready to be chopped off. Ste of 5X5's on standby and put in a good size order for the front end. Hope to be back on it shortly after the new year.

Are you going to tie the new beam into your roll cage, then?

Yes. Will be making some type of a bulkhead and tying this into it. Cage bars will be welded into setup. Think shock towers may be getting removed and mounts be made into the cage. Its still up in the air. Just cut off some flanges and rewelded some spots that werent welded completely.

Looks like you have a great plan and a great start. Looking forward to watching your progress here on STF.

Looking good, hope you plan to remove rack mout so it can be installed with minimum bump steer. I could never understand why front beams come with rack mount installed, no way to know where rack needs to be mounted until you cycle suspension and find the sweet spot.

Good quality is getting harder and harder to find.

Did you lift the body to get 100% welds around your cage tubes?

We drilled holes in the floor and dropped cage down before welding to mounting plates.

Ah, the old "hot rod" way of doing it. It works and does make life easier as long as there isn't too much other stuff going on. Looks pretty nice!

beam support copy.jpg
That is more or less what I am trying to come up with but I have more restrictions and am dealing with fiberglass.

After a lot of arguing with myself: you might want to look into adding a cross-piece where the uprights between the upper and lower tubes are just to be sure the upper tubes (they are long) don't want bend at the upper bend in the tube as it goes into the body in some potential load conditions.

Yea, it will be braced. Going to mount gas tank up there.
