metal fasteners

This is a chart of the grading and coding of metal fasteners.

Again, using the term "AN" as a "descriptor" means nothing without the rest of the numerical and alphabetical coding in-bedded in the part number/name that goes with the starting title of AN as the rest of the part number gives the information needed when dealing with military, ISO and Mil Spec. coding. The whole Military coding tells what the object is (basic title and description) not an assumption of the partial P/N as there are many things starting with "AN". A bad habit to get into. I've even seen businesses and those who seemingly make this stuff use the term AN and they should know better.

Also, when putting a fastener in a softer material like an engine block (for instance), one needs to know the material of the object and it's limits not just installing then tightening down the fastener helter-skelter. If the torqueing of the fastener suddenly gets "soft" you have put too much load in and most likely destroyed the receptacle. I've managed to do this several times in my life.
