I wanted to get an extra set of triple squares socket bits and noticed that the 3 largest sizes are tamper proof on most of the sets. I have a VIM set as well that are all solid.
Does anyone know what started this trend?
I imagine that they are meant to increase the marketability but don't know the application.

I would bet, from a manufacturing standpoint, they can use the metal that is left out of the larger ones, to make the smaller ones... so probably (in my estimation) cost savings on materials. I don't think I have ever seen a 14mm socket head screw with tamper proof post in the middle. I was seeing actual female sockets and couldn't figure out what you were saying until I looked 'em up on Amazon to see what you were referencing. I then went back and read your post to say "Bits" and must have missed it reading through quickly. I originally read it as Sockets... not bit.

I've seen them or something similar to them a long time ago but if I remember correctly the tools have a tendency to walk out or the receptacles to plug easily.

I have yet to see anything or anyone perfect before.
