010 Stall Converter Builder?

Post by risk »

Anyone know of a good converter shop will build me a 2500-3000 stall 010 converter?

I currently have an 010 automatic being built by Dave Folts. The shop that used to build converters for him has closed and he does not have an alternative source. I have made a few calls to a few shops I found online and they do not have any interest.

https://www.greatconverters.com/

When I spoke to them they did not care if it was for a VW or anything else, it's all they do, but they DO need a good core, they don't have the input shaft splined parts etc as its an uncommon unit.

They can even do a pair of drain bolts on the OD in most cases, if you desire to actually drain all the old fluid.
(If you like/if you have room on OD and internally)

Having said that the late Vanagon H & Z converter are ~2750 stall from the factory, also fit a 003.
Given a serious motor they would probably be >3K stall.
(The 003, 010 and 090 VW automatics all can use same converter)
You can buy those off the shelf. The later Mk1/2s probably used same part.

The original converter from my 86 Vanagon turned an old squareback with an 1800cc T4 an absolute hoot to drive.
(Hoping to swap the whole 090 trans in this fall, with a bigger motor)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Pile,
Thanks for the info.

I may need more stall?

This is going behind a 2276 (82x94) Carb'd & Turbo'd with probably FK-10 or webcam 86c and 46x37.5 street fighter 044s.

If the builder spec'd 2750 stall for the engine/turbo combo, its dead on spec.

Want more? have it modded, but if you are going to drive it, I'd try that one first.

Easy to use E85 on an EFI/EMS setup, and better spark control.

The fellow making J&S Safeguard knock controls is also back at it, highly recommended.

I really want to swap from the 091 in my baja to an automatic. I'm subscribed to this.

These folks do nothing else, and can ship anywhere.
They will need a core.
