1911cc questions - L-Jet, standalong EFI or carbs? rpm range?

Hi,
I'm researching a possible future engine rebuild for a 914 using the stock 1.8 L-Jet motor. I'd like a 1911cc that behaved similar to my old 1955cc engine I had in my Beetle (75x90.5) that had a Web110 cam (I believe similar to Engle 120) and Scat D port 40x37.5 valve heads and around 9:1 cr.
I have read the L jet can handle 1911cc if using the stock cam, but also read that the stock cam leaves a lot on the table and is underwhelming.
I dont know what cams are available for type 4s - What would be the best cam for a street driven (not daily) 914 using stock 1800 heads?
With a bigger than stock cam, could the L-Jet be made to work well fairly easily or will it be a lot of work? I had Megasquirt on my 1955cc at one point (lower CR and ran a TD04 Subaru WRX turbo) and would consider using it (or something similar) again if it was going to work well and be reliable.
Or would it be a better option to run a 1911cc with a bigger cam with twin carbs?
Whats a safe rev range when using a stock crank / rods etc on a type 4 motor? Im a type 4 virgin!
Thanks, Neil
