Clutch Stuck I Think??

Post by Stokedog »

I just bolted my 68 model sp to my 68 model tranny that I just took out of my donor bug. Now the clutch feels like it just hits the clutch but won't push it back to release so that I can put the car in gear. I took the motor back off and tried to push the clutch in myself and it will not budge. Isn't it supposed to push in or what? Did I knock something off when I was pulling the motor? What in the heck am I doing wrong??

it pushes in hard but you should be able to with a grunt or two,
does the pedal/clutch work without the engine bolted on???
most times pressure plates are 180 lbs or so to make work.

is it the correct plate for that year car/throwout bearing???

Do you have a "pressure pad"? When I installed a '71 engine in a '67 I had to add a pressure pad... without it I had the same symptoms as you described. The pressure pad mounts to the pressure plate and is what comes in contact with the throwout bearing.

Yeah I believe it has a pressure pad. It was all working fine about 1 year ago. Do you think maybe it is just stuck from sitting and I am not pushing hard enough.(scared I'm going to break something again!)

If the engine's been sitting for a year with the clutch bolted to it it's almost a sure thing that the disk is rusted to the flywheel and/or cover and isn't going to release even if the pressure plate is compressed, so you want to unbolt the clutch and clean things up a little with some coarse sandpaper anyway. When the pressure plate is off you can set it on the floor and step on the release ring to confirm that it moves - it should under your weight.
