I am working on a nearly complete custom job right now and I want to start planning the engine I want to build. I have never done any work inside the engine but dont see the point in wasting my time on an engine that wont satisfy me. Can any body reccomend any books websites or anything else to help me.
I am thinking I want 90.5mm P/C, With 82mm Stroke. I hear going with a Mild cam will create a more reliable engine?
what else can you tell me??
Tim

Shorten your stroke, it will make your build easier.
Go with 94s over the 90.5s.
Buy the Tom Wilson book about rebuilding a VW engine, and get a Bentley manual, as well.
Cam selection is a key to success. A mild cam in a big-displacement engine is sure to disappoint you. A wild cam in an engine that doesn't flow well enough to use it will also disappoint you. Get a cam that is matched to your engine combination.
Ask questions on this forum. Preferably before you spend money. There are a few people on here who are very well respected and know quite a bit about this topic.
Before you ask a question, use the search function. Many of your questions have probably been answered before.
Good luck.

In my mind you will be best of if you go about it in this order.
deside your stroke 69mm is the way to go if you are on a budget. but if not go for ether 78mm or 84mm, any bigger that 84 will be clerance problems in your enginecase, any smaller tha 78mm you can stick with the std. 69 'cause the diffrence is to small for the price.
get the 94mm they are the same price as the 90.5, 92mm is just plain BAD. to thin walls.
set out to find some good heads (I'd say 60% of the power is in the head 10% is in the Compression ratio another 10% is in the cam choice the other 20% is how good how put it together), my tip here is the CB's CNC heads.
get some carbs or fuel inj. system. it will be disided by your cc and valve size and more...
how and not before now you should check into the cam choice, 'couse only now you got the info that are MINIMUM to picking cam and rockers. take all the info you got plus a description of your driveing style and purpus of your car (weekend warrior, true drag-strip, daily driver...) to your nearby VW shop, they will help you out.

This one! Get over to "Engine Rebuild" or "Speed & Drag Race" and start reading. Use the search feature and look for any engine related word you can think of. It has all be discussed, & debated.
Then decide exactly WHAT you out of an engine; Top speed?, low-end torque? ultimate reliablity? extreme longevity? cheap? One engine will not be all of the above; You'll have to compromise something for something else. And remember these two sayings.
"Speed costs money. How fast do you want to go?"
"Making your car go fast makes your money go faster."

First you might want to find a budget?
4,000 will buy or build a pretty nice motor.
or 1500 will build a nice small motor.
don't cheap out on parts if will cost you in the long run.
