auto trans in a \'73?

Post by cbl2197 »

I am looking into buying a 1973 bus, and the guy selling it said it has an automatic transaxle. It is kinda far to drive and look at it, so before I do, I wanted to know if they came with automatics of autosticks and if so is it worth anything? Both in use or as trade for a manual. Any info would be helpful.

I know '73s came with autosticks because my owners manual from mine (manual trans) talks about it a little, I've not had any real experance with them though.

Unlike the autostick shift found in type 1 vehicles the type 2 automatic is a very good heavy duty unit. Do`nt quote me on this but I think it is the same as that used in type 4 cars. I would`nt be at all afraid of having one. They use them in rock crawlers and that is extremely demanding of the transmission. Good Luck. Bob

The Bus never came with a autostick. They are true 3 speed autonatics. The automatic part is common to the type3, 4 and quite a few Audis as well. The differential sections have slight differences and several final drive ratios are available. I am not sure if all are interchangable.
