lowpro,

the FI system, while perhaps difficult to understand at first, is simple to operate and repair, and will be better for you in CA, where if i understand correctly, you have very strict regulations on modifying your vehicle. FI will also give you better fuel economy than carbs when well maintained and tuned. the good thing, too, is that there are usually plenty of used bits and pieces around for a bus like yours, since lots of people pull the FI off (mistakenly) at the first or second sign of trouble. i have seen entire FI setups for sale for less than 50.00.

dual carbs will make more HP, no doubt, but they are no panacea for your fuel system. they bring a whole fresh set of tuning and set-up problems that are no easier than to get right than the FI system, and no cheaper either. in fact the FI system is probably cheaper overall, especially if you factor in the ongoing cost of fuel.

i'd advise staying away from the single progressive carb, it is the worst way to go, by far.

if you stick around on this and the type4um, there are lots of discussions about FI and some very knowledgeable folks to learn from. also search the archives here for threads on FI - there are lots, and i remember a good one here on the busbarn a few months ago. if you don't have manuals, you need to get them, since you can't work on the FI without them. there are some good pages and FI manuals for download at type2.com in the library section under fuel.

if you need to rerpair the harness of the FI, this is really easy with simple tools and some documentation. if you need some parts, they are all still available new or good used. a decent dual carb setup will set you back at least 400.00 for everything (carbs, manifolds, electric fuel pump, linkage, sundries), and you will still have to make some mods to get the power brake booster and distributor vacuum advance to function, plus you will likely have no cold start mechanism with dual carbs, unless you went with the VW bus setup from 72-74, which is too small for your motor anyways.

as you can tell, i advocate staying with the stock FI for a bus, not just for smog reasons, and i am not alone in this opinion. if you running a sand rail, track car or such like, or someplace where the smog is not an issue, then go for dual weber or dell 40's (or bigger!). for a stock westy or hauler bus application, the FI is hard to beat. don't get me wrong, a set of dual webers will work great when set up well, they will give you more HP (at the expense of your fuel bill) they look super cool and have geek appeal. but if you want a system that is simple to keep running day in day out, and does everything you need it to do (make the motor go, work with the power brakes, work with a stock dizzy, pass the smog test), i say stock FI is the best.

Hi punkinfair thank you very much for all the help with everything. I am going to stay with the stock fi now and just try to get it running. I made a post a cuple days ago about my starter and I just wanted to let everyone know that I checked all the wires and everything and it turns out that it is my ignition swith. Its not sending power out to the 50 going to the starter. So I need to get a new one and do some fuel pump work and the little bay should be running. Thank you all very much for all the help.

Thank You,
Chris.
