Engine size=year questions

Post by Z »

I heard from a few people that a 76 Bus had a 2000cc stock. I'm looking for a engine bigger than a 1600 for my baja Ghia. I was wanting to know what year busses came stock with engines bigger than 1600s.

z,

from '72 onwards the engines were bigger, type IV motors. 72-74 was 1700, then they grew to 1800, and in around '76 and after they were 2000.

The bus engine up to 1971 was a T1 upright beetle engine, after that, it was the T4 pancake engine, with 1700 cc increasing up to 2000 cc in 1976. All the cases are essentially the same, but there are a few differences. Same engine also used in T4's and Porsche 914, although there are minor differences for the various applications.

The engine can be modified to fit into other vehicles, check out the info in the type4 part of the site, that's what its all about...

But if you want to put the T4 engine in something else, you may have to convert the engine to upright cooling, you may have to use non-stock exhaust headers, you may need to rig up a support, etc. Its not something that simply bolts in, in place of a T1 engine, although the conversion isn't that difficult. The bolt pattern between engine and belhousing is the same, but its not a straight swap...

You can increase the stroke from 71 to 78 mm and the bore from 94 to 96 and get 2270 cc's. Increase the CR, put on dual carbs, and you are into the 160hp plus range. Lots can be done, if you want to spend the $$. You can get some aluminum cylinders and pistons from LN Engineering and get close to 3000cc, and push close to 200hp ...

Check around, do some searches, review some old threads, its all in here in some form or other, but start with the Type4 forum, most of the info is in there.

Both the off-road forum and type4rum will give you useful information. The T-1 engine can easily be taken to 2000cc as well. Will be more cost effective andmore responsive as well. However the T-4 engine is considered to be much stronger internally. Good luck. Bob Ingman
