Have any of you folks used these manifolds from FAT?I love these carbs;cheap, easy to set up,plentiful,40mm,etc.I understand the principals of volumetric efficiency, but it seems to me that since only one cylinder applies vacuum to the carb at once,a bank of 2 cylinders should be able to share a single barrel, and achieve the same result as 2 barrels, except possibly at high RPM(5000+).Any input will be appreciated.

Due two the nature of the four-4 cycle proces, you should be able to use ONE-1 carb on a four-4 cylinder engine to achieve same result as two twin carbs.
But, you have to calculate air flow and velocity which is poor on a 4 cycle Boxer engine. Another factor is the reverse pulse you get from the closing valves, whihc would further disrupt the flow.

The advantage of using dual two barrel carbs like the Dellorto or Webers on a four cylinder engine is you have one barrel per cylinder allowing you to fine tune each cylinder individually. This maximizes volumetric efficiency across the entire RPM range and greatly improves fuel efficiency.

The "two single-throat carb" setup came on at least some Type IVs from the factory. The European-spec 1.8 liter 914 came with Solex 40 PSDIT (or PDSIT, I forget which) carbs which are single throat. I'd bet that some other ones did as well.
They can indeed be made to work pretty well. I think the main advantage over the paired dual-throat carbs (from the factory's viewpoint) was that the single-throats were cheaper.

Here in the US, we received the 72-early 75 Transporters with dual 34PDSIT single barrel carbs. I should know, I own a '74 Westy with a set. They work great for the stock engine, but if you're looking for more power, nothing beats a set of twin dual throats.
In Europe, a large number of 411/412s also received dual carbs. I don't recall off the top of my head if they were the 34s like the Bus or the 40s like the 914s, but they were PDSITs.
