914 gearbox in 69 ty1
Has anyone ever put a tailshift 914 gear box in a IRS car I saw a site where one was installed in a 71 bus.

If you want five speeds in reverse and only one forward gear, it's a very good way to go. Otherwise, just pick up a 65-69 911 "901" transmission.

I'm working on this conversion myself. If you use a 914 flywheel and clutch than it'll all bolt up (assuming you're using a type 4)
if you use your stock VW axles it'll bolt right up, as far as using the stronger Porsche ones, I'm not sure.
its not a direct bolt in, but its not that bad of a swap, you'll want to use the 911 front tranny mount, its easy to do with a little welding, and the shift selector is a little lower than the vw unit, so you'll have to do some cutting and welding on the pan and bend the shift linkage to meet the porsch tranny.
you can use the porsche shifter with a section of tunnel welded to the bug pan, or you can use the bug shifter with a little modification, so that you can engage all the gears.
there's a couple sights out there that have more info on this, but THE VW BEETLE Performance Handbook, is a great source on this and other performance mods.

OH ya, I'm not sure how well the tailshift tranny will work in a bug, but you can flip the ring to make it turn the right direction.
I did this with 914 sideshift, but decided that it was to much work to use in a bug.
you'll need to pull the gears right out of the tranny, its not terribly difficult since they all come out together, pull the diff side cover off and flip the diff, put the gears back in and bolt it back together.
if you're luck enough to have a 901 that has differentila access covers on both sides (I'm not sure if such a thing exists) then all you'd have to do is pull both sides off and swap the diff to the opposite side.
