I'm considering installing an auxiliary oil cooler with a fan/blower to use for cabin heat and defroster. My main concern is the engine oil temp. The temperature in my area averages between 20 and 32 degrees (F) in the winter. Will the engine get up to operating temperature with the oil cooler/blower option? I don't want crankcase moisture to be a problem.
I also have a set of Transporter heater boxes that I'm sure will be very efficient, but they are very heavy and bulky. I did some investigation on the gas heaters, but I don't want to cut and drill a lot of holes to install the thing. They're also quite expensive and difficult to maintain.

Getting the oil up to operating temperature is the job of the thermostat, plain and simple. Put one in the oil lines, which bypasses the cooler when the oil is too cold.
It's tough to say how much a cooler will cool your oil. There are a whole lot of variables involved, including the cooler size, fan capacity, the exact ducting to and from the cooler, and so on. So unless you can find someone with a setup very close to what you want to build, you'll pretty much have to work off of guesses.

Hi
I have something similar but my car has water cooling. As said above you are going to have to suck it & see. If you use a thermostaticaly controlled take off block you shouldnt get any oil flow to the cooler until the oil is warm. I have used a couple really early Audi 100 (inboard front disc brakes) brake cooling fans to push the air into my heater channels. Mount the cooler opposite to where the battery is in a box and suck the warm air through it, the air will recirculate and heat up the cabin. I use my rear vent leaver to operate my heater tap. Why not get hold of a Beetle or Type 3 or 4 oil cooler and mount it on a dog house bug oil cooler braket, tap the fittings for your oil lines and the make a little box out of grp or sheet metal. You would need to also have some sort of fail safe so the motor did not over heat, maybe an inline thermo block to direct oil to your regular external oil cooler at a cerain temperature.

Hi,
I put a large EMPI external oil cooler on my engine, with roughly 1/2 meter of piping in and out. This extra liter of oil kept my oil temperature right down, so down if fact I am planning to fit an thermpostat, so the extra oil does not come into play until the operating temperature has been reached!
I also have a fan wirted up to come on at 90degress (I know Joe, it should be higher) but it very rarely comes on, hence the need for the thermostat.
But without the extra oil in the cooler, my engine got very hot!
