42 berg specials

Post by surfdahouse@dh »

I just bought a pair of 42 Berg weber specials and was wondering if anyone can help me really tell they are 42 specials. The numbers were grinded off the back of the float bowl but anyone can do that . Anything to set them apart from regular dcnf webers ?

the mixture screws have nuts you can turn with a wrench and the grinding off of the numbers is very nicely done. Wayne

Thanks Wayne.Do you have a set of 42 specials? Are there any other features that set them apart?

I have a set of "42 Specials." The grinding off of the numbers should look like some kind of factory machining. Very subtle, very unnoticable. The idle mixture screws should have a jam nut on them of about 12 to 13 mm or 1/2". Again, it should look like it came from the factory like this. Finally, under the "butterflys" there should be 4 progression circuit holes. If you look real carefully, it should have the appearance that they have been drilled out slightly from the factory hole size. If you combine these features with the ARPM air filters and Berg linkage, you will be hard pressed to tell for sure that these are not true Berg 42 Specials. By the way, if these are true Berg 42 Specials, you'll have difficulty finding a better running street carb for an air-cooled VW. I LOVE mine on my daily driven, 100+ h.p. 1776.

Don't the manifolds have 'BERG' on them?

On older (70's) sets the grinding looks like it's just done with a dremel, later sets it's cleaner, like it's done on a mill. Also on later sets if you take off the top and look at the enrichment circuit there will be two 8mm (?) hex Allen head set screws capping off the circuit. If you try to move the enrichment levers they will not budge. Older sets the air cleaners have ARPM cast into them, newer sets do not. The velocity stacks on older sets are kind of amateurish, the newer sets are good quality but are still welded (steel) and the surface has a bit of texture and looks anodized, not smooth or polished. Type 3 sets didn’t have velocity stacks.

Plus all the points the others have said.

I have the Gene Berg manifolds but I am not sure about the carbs. I have to look alot closer at the progression circuits to see if they were drilled. I might have the older version because the serial #'s are not really grinded that cleanly. Thanks , Alan

The reason I have these heads is because the engine is for my 79 bus and I don't have the money right now for new ones.
