if you go to gex you can get a new case on your engine for $100. you can also get new heads.i dont know how there heads are though. i recommend you get the new case with a gex engine.

Who would you recommend for a good turn-key engine?

Yourself!!!!! Seriously, no one cares as much about your motor as you do.

If you have the room, and time you will save money and have a better motor then any mass producer can sell you.

I agree with James above.... read the book called.. how to rebuild your aircooled VW engine by Tom Wilson... and build your own!! because nobody cares about your engine...just your money....
if you do buy an engine..buy from someone who is close to you so if you have problems you can bring it back without all the shipping hassle... good luck

Hi everyone,
You all have good advice.
I would like to add my 2 cents.
If you prefer not to do your own engine work then I would suggest Jake Raby. I know that he is heavy into typeIV now but he still builds typeI's. I just fired up my 1776 with all the goodies that Jake built and man it sure sounds sweet. He is probably not the cheapest but I would argue he is one of the best. In my humble opinion.

Thanks Doug,

Glad you finally got that engine fired up after almost a year.....

All we do now is turnkey engines, just like we did for Doug. Now every engine we build goes on the dyno for a torture test and to see exactly what jetting, timing and etc it really needs to live a long life.

for a long time, some of us vw guys purchased items based soley on price, bringing a lot of crap into the marketplace. this is a perfect example of how this can be corrected: massive type 4 has been a valuable member of this board and he is apparently a talented motor assembler. sometimes you get what you paid for so wouldn't you rather be saddled with quality? support vendors like jake instead of color-ad-in-magazine guys please (rant)

Jake Raby does turn-keys. If you don't want that, we do type 1 longblocks, or you can do it yourself!
