okay the 1.7 liter in my 914 went boom and now reads 0 on 2 cylinders,in checking into rebuilding this motor i am finding quite ridiculous quotes on parts.i am considering using the esslinger engineering kit and installing a 2.3 ford in my car,more power in stock form,increased reliabilty,more power......any insight in this would be appreciated.

An in-line engine sits to high unless you want to hack in a hood scoop!

Ask anyone who has done a convertion it will cost you as much (or more) to put in a different USED engine as it will to rebuild your engine. Used running 1.7L's go for fairly cheap or you can use a VW bus engine, just swap the flywheel/clutch and they bolt in.
Try a couple of different shops and scrap yards in your area first. Mark

Same amount of work, just fits.

Still going to cost ya to do the conversion. You have to hack in a rad, plumb, it etc., etc.

I don't know how much a Subaru engine goes for in Texas, but up here they cost a bit, because all of the aircraft home builders want them.

If it is cheap you want, I don't think you will do better than a good used 1.7L.
A conversion 'at best' will be break even with a rebuild, with a lot more work. (Of course if you have a bud who gives you everything, thats a different story).

OKAY I HAVE A BLOWN 1.7 WIYH A PIECE OF CRAP WEBER PROGRESSIVE ON IT WHICH COULD BARELY GO DOWN A HILL AT A REASONABLE SPEED WHEN RUNNING WELL.MY MAIN QUESTION IS WHICH WOULD BE MORE COST EFFECTIVE TO ACHIEVE 120 TO 130 HORSIES,WHEN YOU WEIGH IN THE NEED TO PURCHASE NEW CARBS(600-700 DOLLARS)REBULID THE 1.7 LITER BUY NEW HEADS ETC,ETC.
OR INSTALL A MOTOR WHICH HAS THE DESIRED POWER STOCK AND PERFORM THE REQUIRED MODS TO GET IT RUNNING I.E. PLUMBING RADIATOR,FABBING NEW MOTOR MOUNTS ETC,I DON'T CARE ABOUT ORIGINALITY, I CARE ABOUT A STRONG RUNNING RELIABLE CAR SINCE THIS IS MY MAIN SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION.

......A buddy and I are doing the [what if] argument on a cadilac northstar motor and automatic trans. .....think of the dependability. and we both have seen how well it fits a fiero......so,what if???

Sounds like another dream project to hack up a 914 to improve it! After you sawzall it apart and start buying the conversion pieces you will quit. It costs alot of money to swap any other motor in.

YEP!!!

[email protected] has a 150hp 2.2l motor for sale for $2500 if you want a screamer. Not the best for the street tho, so maybe stick to a good 2.0l. They are probably fast enough for you if you want reliable.

i am in the process of getting all of the parts to do a suby 2.5 liter swap so far the parts are 2 k

engine with harness etc was 1500 and adapter kit 500

i figure the radator and stuff will be another 500 so i will have 2500 in it and 200 hp ( after simple modes to the motor )

if you want 130 hp the suby 2.2 will cost about 1000 from lkq auto parts ( was redding ) i delt with Gene he was great, their number was 530 221 8162

and i plan on putting the radator under a gt engine lid

most bang for your dollar comes from a rotary 13b conversion.

you can buy a royary out of a junkyard for $150, rebuild it if need be for $500.
www.2rotor.com is the guys with the best pricing on rotary's i have seen.

he can get you a 13b twin turbo with intercooler for under a grand.

I'm sorry red914, but if your 1.7 car couldn't reach a reasonable speed going downhill - when running well - then it wasn't EVER running well! My slightly modified "mini big-bore" (1920) pulls strong to 6500rpm, has EASILY done over 110mph and makes about 110hp with factory D-Jet FI. And I'm very confident I didn't spend anywhere near what you are contemplating by hacking up a 914 to put some Ford junk behind your seat!

Ford junk eh. Well Im in the process of putting a ford 2.3L turbo in the back of a Ghia and well once im done with the engine its gonna push 300hp easy. I plan to do the whole project for under 4000 with car. I think a 2.3L conversion would be awesome in a 914 and I would fully reccomend the ford 2.3L engine. Take a stroll over to the conversion perversion forum and see some posts about the 2.3 turbo. Its definetly gaining popularity over there. I say go for it but do your research. You gotta have big goals man and be original.

IMHO if I was going to do the hack and cut, I would not consider anything but a 350 chevy. All others a waste of time and a 914.

Personaly I will do a T4 and if I ever have the coin a 3.0 or 3.2 Porsche before anything else.

Actually there is a guy with a 454 in a ghia. Its mid-mounted and very cool. He is selling it on the samba if you want to check it out. its really well done too. he is pushin 300hp just like I will be.
