What\'s My Engine Worth?

Post by Tui »

I have a Type I or III (I don't know how to tell the difference)which was built for a Formula Super Vee to be used in SCCA Solo II events and I would like to know what sort of price I could ask for it. Here are the specs:

Total Time since build 80 mins.
Size: 2276cc. Engine was built with a new AS21 case which was machined for Hydraulic & Dry sumped/Clearanced/opened to 94mm.
Rods: Bugpack Race Rods E4340:balanced.
Crank: 82 Stroker/ Race Balanced.
Flywheel: 200mm/12v/lightened/8 dowel/race balanced.
Cam, Lifters: #535H Hyraulic cam kit.
Oil Pump: Big Hole "A" pump.
Pistons and Cylinders: 94 x 82 /Race Balanced.
Cylinder Heads: Super Flo Opened to 94mm / Ported and Polished.
Deck Height: .055
Comp Ratio: 11.20:1
Oil Pressure: 75 lbs.
Carburetor: Dual Weber 48IDA (I am going to keep those however will sell with the engine the intake manifolds as they are 3 bolt for the Super Flo heads).
Dyno: Around 180hp.

I am returning my race car (1973 Tui BH3 Super Vee) back to original configuration with a Type IV SV engine (when I can find one) and want to know whether it would be better to part out or sell complete which is what I would rather do. What's it worth?

Thanks,
Mike.

Don't part it out, takes too long. I say sell it whole.

I'm guessing you can't tell which Type it is because there is absolutely NO cooling tin on the engine, not to mention any sort of fan, so an easy way it to look at the oil sump. If there is a hole on the right side of the sump with a stud on either side of the hole, it's T3 (looks sorta like ·O· ) or at least set up for a T3 oil filler tube Image

Toby,

I am going to try and attach 3 photos of the engine which is still installed in the car --- hope it works.

I have circled an oil filler cap (although engine is dry sumped). Is that what you mean?

Thanks,
Mike.

I can't tell from the pictures. You need to look at the oil sump. The right face would show it. Being a race engine I'm willing to bet that it's the common T1. When you strip and engine down that far, T1 and T3 engine have no differences because at their genetic-level, they are the same engine.

Toby ---- thanks. I think you are right it is probably a type 1. Any idea what I might be able to ask for the engine? I took a look at your page, nice car! Attached is a photo of the Tui. It is thought that this car won the 1973 VW Gold Cup Championship with Bertil Roos driving. The car also competed in Germany at Hockenheim.

I am not the right person to ask. My engines are built by pros who know what they're doing based upon what I want. I would guess $3000-$5000 but that's just a guess. Someone who builds/races would give a more educated asking range. I would think a leak-down test result, along with a recent dyno run chart, would help in selling it as it would show it's in running condition and allow the purchaser to see it's hp and torque range which is important to someone who wants to use it for race or modified street use.

Toby,

Thanks for your help. Unfortunately I do not have the dyno sheet however I have some other info, for instance I know who built the engine etc. I was told by a previous owner who had the engine built that it was dynoed at around 200hp, but when I sell I will advertise it at 180hp just to be safe. I think around $2000 is probably what I will ask. It is a shame that I have to sell but I have to use a smaller displacement engine (1700cc) to be legal in vintage racing.
