You can have your stub axles and the trans CV flanges modified for type 2,4, thing or Porsche 924 or 944 CVs (all the same pattern). Or you can buy exchange units. All the listed CVs allow greater angles than the type 1 CVs do. And greater angles = more travel. However without going to longer, wider or both arms you will still be somewhat limited, like less than 10 inches of travel.

So if they are all the same bolt pattern (the ones you've mentioned above) Which ones have the most travel? Or are they about the same?
What kind of modifications need to be made to my(inner and outter) stubs? Is it just a matter of bolt pattern or?
I plann to modify the control arms/torsion arms for more travel but don't want to if the axles are gonna bind anyway....
Thanks for the info!

vwlownslo, check out this recent thread about Type 181 (Thing) CV's and the questions about CV angles and stuff that came up. Good reading on the subject.

I am wondering what I can do to get better travel out of the rear end of my bug?
I don't want to extend my trailing arms or widden the rear track though..
I guess the CV joints would be the deciding factor in travel? right?
I am running a stock bug trans `70's IRS with factory rear stubs and axles currently...
What could I do or use CV wise to get better travel and still use the factory stubs and trans...
Reccomendations boys.....

i run the stock arms clearanced with the 930 joints and get 10" of wheel travel. The next problem is the torsion bars get expensive to get ones that will handle that degree of twist without breaking or being to harsh. Ended up going to coil overs to keep the ride. you can use cheaper bars if you are willing to run long torsion bars.

What type of modification is needed to run 930cv joints? (flanges, machining etc..)
Are 930cv's hard to find?
What are some of the costs?

No modifications are needed to use the 930 set-up. It is all bolt in . Transform and others have the complete kits and are in the $500-600 range. The kit will include stubs, CVs, axles, boots and drive flanges. Good luck. Bob Ingman

Cost varies greatly with your supplier of parts. I bought 6-930 joints, conversion stubs and trans flanges for about $200 at a swap meet. The SAW axles for the 930 joints were around $175. New cvs ar around $75 each @ Fat. I think i saw converted stubs and flanges on Drew's offroad or Larry's for a cheaper than fat price.

So its just a matter of swaping out the inner stubs, or outter's as well? no spacers or anything?
Thanks guys!

Because the 930 has a different spline diameter and spline count it must use its own axle. In this case the axle becomes the spacer. It all works out if you swap everything from stub to drive flange. Good luck. Bob Ingman

O.K, I get it now... But, will the stock bug brakes work on those stubs?

If it is a modified STOCK stub, yes. The modifications are to the CV jount flange and don't affect the brakes.

OK, Well what kind of modifications would I have to make to my stock type 1 outter stub?
That is what your refering to right?
I am a little confused...
Can some one tell me EXACTLY what I will need to add 930cv joints, inner and outter stubs (or whatever will work) to my stock late `70's model trans and stock rear drums?
PLEASE!

www.precisionalloy.com has everything but the drive axles for the 930 or the T-2 conversion.

You can use type 1 axles with the type 2 style CVs. You have to grind the shoulder (next to the jount) back a bit for clearance.
