is it a bad idea to split a case to fix an oil leak and reassemble it with the same bearings?

no its not a bad idea, it is a bad idea not to check for excessive wear though, it is a great opportunity to ward off potential problems.

So long as the bearings go back in the same saddles they came out of it won't be a problem - mark the center main and cam bearing shells as you remove them, same goes for the lifters.

If she is willing to pay then fix it right, bearings are about 35 bucks, new rings another 20 maybe, if she wants it cheap, pull the valves and lap them in again, use a new gasket kit and very little goop,
you are untorqueing ( is that a word ) a case so the bearings ( aluminum ) are not going to sit right in the saddles again.
