Dis Drive ?
Personal preference I think; I don't do it this way because the flywheel isn't on yet and the crankshaft endplay isn't controlled - could harm the brass gear on the crank; but since you should be checking the installed endplay of the pinion before mating the case anyway, why not leave it in? BUT put the spring and a distributor in immediately; if the pinion climbs up and you turn the motor it will chew up the brass gear and you'll have to replace it.

Exactly.
I prefer to install the drive and distributor before dropping in the crank for the final time. set up the distributor to aproxamately the number 1 position, then drop the crank in at top dead center.
For me, when i do my motor tare downs, i only unbolt the distributor bracket and pull out. then when it goes back in, dis goes in to the number 1 postion, crank drops in and by the time i go to fire up the motor again, its still got the same timing as i tore it down with.

Hey Mike,
How do you know the crank is at TDC when you drop it in? What Pos. is everything (including mesh marks on cam gear?

If you're holding the crank up by #1 rod as you drop it in it's a pretty safe bet that it's close to TDC on the crank. Then match up the cam timing marks; roll it back 90° to where the rotor is pointed at the notch on the distributor again and look at the cam lobes if you need a reality check (if #2/4 exhaust lobe is pointed upwards and the other three aren't, that's TDC on #1).

Dis Drive ?
I like to put the dizzy drive gear and dizzy in before dropping the crank in.
Makes certain that the drive is perfect on #1 when I time it.
The one time I tried the other way I ended up 180 degrees off
DOH!
