oil pump groove for O-ring?

On every oil pump I have looked at there circular groove that looks like it was made for an O-ring. Yet all oil pumps come with a paper gasket. I have purchased a melling recently that I haven't installed yet so I pulled it out and checked it-sure enough the groove is there but this one is a v shape instead of being squared off. Is this a prehistoric seal groove from early times that is left over from years of evolution? I am thinking about stiking an O ring in and seeing what happen-Come to think of it my deano dry sump pump has them -what gives?

on the Melling, the groove you'll notice, has a return channel to the pump cavity, this design releases pressure so the gasket isn't compromised by the forces of pressure.

Don't. It's strictly a scavenge passage, not designed for an O-ring like the Deano pumps.

I would make it a Square groove if I used an O-ring but I guess I won't if this groove actually has a use. So it's supposed to catch excess oil and bring it around back to the pump? intersting. The melling is sitting if front of me and yes it does have a horizonal groove. Just thinking about better ways to seal these things up since I sell seals for a living I figure I should let my motor or tranny leak anything. By the way I can get custom seals at a great price and I would pass it on to any one that needs any thing. So far I have gotten some bus brake fluid resevoir seals that are not made any more and they look OEM. -SS

I like the Berg pressure-relief cover. Had an offroad engine that would always leak at the cover if it was revved quickly before fully warmed up until I put one of those on, now I'm a believer.

I have never taken a close look at that part how does it work and where does the xtrs pressure end up? I just got a hoses crimper and can press my own Teflon/stainless hose like they use and I already have a cast iron FF cover so I didn't plan on ordering their kit-can I get this cover by itself and is it for Full Flow?
