Hello,
Does anyone know the original style of hardware finish for a 40HP Motor?
I've seen various original non restored motors with cadium plating and zinc plating?
The parts I'm talking about are the tin hardware, air cleaner clips, fuel pump top, carburator hardware, etc.
Any help would greatly be appreciated as well as pictures.
Thanks!

Past weekend I tore apart a "freebie" 40 hp engine that looked to be stock and original(usual fith and rust). There were no cad-plated fasteners on it. The generator backing plate was held to the fan shroud with 4 M6 hex bolts. The tin was all attached with round slotted- head sheetmetal screws with washers underneath the heads. The fresh-air fan shroud hoses attached with thin hose clamps with "VW" logo on them. The engine case had silver-colored M8 nuts with lock washers underneath. When you assemble the engine case, look at those M8 nuts closely. They should have a small mark on one of the "faces". Put the nuts on the engine studs so that that little mark faces outward, and if you have some nuts that are in worse shape (edges rounded off from wrench slipping) put those in back (under the fan shroud) or underneath the engine; have the best ones up at the fuel pump and above the crank pulley- they fall into plain sight. The coil bracket was held on by M6 bolts, if I remember... Try to use the original coil bracket, which has slots in it. The bracket for the later replacement coils has an open end, which is different from the stock one... easy give-away. The fan shroud uses a slotted screw where it is held onto the cylinder shrouds on the bottom sides. If you have a bench grinder with a wire-wheel brush, this is excellent for cleaning up your fasteners. Tedious work, but essential for a clean-looking finished engine. Another thing- when you close up your case, wipe off the excess seam sealer from the seams after you tighten the case- spray some brake or carb-cleaner spray onto a paper towel, and wipe it along the seams.
